I don't work; can my spouse be ordered to pay my bills until the divorce is final?

If you don't work and you're going through a divorce, you may be able to ask the judge to order your spouse to pay your bills. This is what we think of as temporary spouse's support or temporary support. During the course of a divorce case, the judge is going a look at what the income is coming in and what the expenses are that are required to be paid. Our judges want to make sure that each spouse's minimum reasonable needs and living expenses are taken care of. And that's true whether you're working or not, the court can look at the net income of the party who is working to determine how much of that income should be contributed to the other party's expenses. And so during a divorce case, it's very important to consult with your attorney about what your expenses are in order to make sure that those are met during the divorce.
