Custody is a word that's often used colloquially when people are talking about divorce or any situation involving the breakup of a family. Custody in the real world sense isn't quite what people think it is legally. In Texas, the word that we as family lawyers use for custody is actually conservatorship. And what that essentially means is the ability to make decisions for a child with regard to their medical treatment, educational decisions, psychological treatment, dental treatment, stuff like that. And these rights and duties make up what would be considered child custody. Another aspect of that, too, is possession and access, which is basically visitation, a schedule of when mom and dad get to see, spend time with the children.
